Tikanga An introduction to te āo Māori – The guide to understanding the Māori world from a 21st century point of view.

“There is much information on the ‘what’, ‘how’ and even ‘when’ concerning tikanga. But not a lot on the reasons the elements of tikanga have developed,” says author Keri Opai,

In recent years the interest and appetite to learn more about te ao Māori has grown exponentially.  “I hope the book will resonate with Pākehā, people who weren’t born here in Aotearoa and especially Māori people who are not familiar with Māori language and Māori cultural practices.”

Description

Tikanga An introduction to te ao Māori

Our book is out now. Written by my esteemed friend Keri Opai (linguist, educator, official te reo translator, cultural advisor), accompanied by my photographs, the book gives readers an opportunity to peer into our Māori Universe.

Here’s a little more about the book:
Tikanga is an accessible, beginner’s guide to the Māori world. In reality, it’s better described as a Māori universe with all of the subtleties, idiosyncrasies and nuances of any culture.
The book enables readers to peer into the wharenui (meeting house) with respectful curiosity and learn to appreciate some of the fascinating intricacies of the people, language and culture of indigenous Aotearoa.

Keri says there is a dearth of informed writing about te ao Māori from people who not academics and live in this world every day.

“There is no book like it. Tikanga offers a glimpse into te ao Māori from an insider’s perspective.

And I’ve really tried to concentrate on why, at least from my point of view, things happen the way they do in the Māori world.”  Tikanga is, simply and broadly speaking, a Māori ‘way of doing things’: the customary system of practices and values that are expressed in every social context. Based on the root word ‘tika’, to be right, correct. It is the constant, yet flexible, gravity of the Māori universe.

“There is much information on the ‘what’, ‘how’ and even ‘when’ concerning tikanga. But not a lot on the reasons the elements of tikanga have developed,” says Opai.  In recent years the interest and appetite to learn more about te ao Māori has grown exponentially.
