Mount Taranaki night star photoChromaLuxe Metal Print

“Mōunga Taranaki photographed from the Hangataahua awa – Stony river, Okato during Pūanga/Matariki – The Māori New Year, featuring the two brightest stars in the night sky.

Above the Kaitake range on the left you can see the brightest star, Takurua  (‘Sirius’, the “Dog Star”) which is part of Te Kāhui Takurua (the constellation ‘Canis Major’). The star is also known as Tautahi and Hinetakurua – seen here on the eastern horizon before sun rise during the month of Pipiri. It is considered to be one of two wives of the sun, with whom the sun spent the winter months.

The second brightest star (above right) is Paepaepoto (‘Canopus’) which is half the strength of Takurua even though the emanating glow looks similar here. This star is also known as Autahi, Aotahi and Atutahi

This single image capture was taken as a long exposure in the dark of night, eighty minutes before sunrise. The conditions were windless yet chilly at just a few degrees celsius. Standing on the rocky river bed, it was sooo dark, the Mōunga was not visible. The experience of seeing what my camera had recorded, felt magical.

As uri (a descendant) of Te Kāhui Mōunga people, this is the location of some of our ancient and significant pūrakau.  This is the area where our tūpuna (ancestors) migrated, from the Central Plateau of the North Island of New Zealand, settling at this river mouth.  The experience of connecting with this uniquely special rocky awa, the Mōunga and the night sky was simply wondrous.”
